Nehemiah is more the official "record" (Neh. 7:5) and ties up the loose ends (so to speak) of the "head count" of Ezra. If you look at the "count" of the "whole congregation" (Ezra 2:64, Neh. 7:66), the numbers match, but the list of names given in Ezra and Nehemiah don't match. Both books have 42,360 numbered; 29,818 are named in Ezra, but Nehemiah names 1765 that are NOT in Ezra. Subtract these two numbers from the "whole congregation" and you have a difference of 10,777. Now if you take those that are named in Nehemiah (31,089) and NOT in Ezra you have 494. Subtract these two figures from the total and you again get 10,777. So there is really no discrepancy.
