Abraham had only one son?

Genesis 16:15 And Hagar bare Abram a son: and Abram called his son's name, which Hagar bare, Ishmael.
Genesis 21:2 For Sarah conceived, and bare Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him.
Genesis 22:2 And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.
In Genesis 22:2 God tells Abraham to sacrifice his "only son Isaac". How can this be? Clearly Abraham fathered two children, Ishmael by Hagar and Isaac by Sarah.

Hebrews 11:12, 17-19 In verse 17 monogenes "only begotten son" means "the only one of the family." Interesting because Issac was the child of promise, whereas Ishmael was the child of human devising.
Galations 4:21-31 should clarify the situation even more. Ishmael represents the "old covenant" in that "all that the LORD has said we will do" Ex. 24:3. Whereas the new covenant is built on better promises. God's promises, not ours. Hebrews 8:6-10 states that the new covenant is not based on what we can do, but upon what God has promised...to place His law within our heart. Fascinating study. Mahalo.
