Problem

Is Timna male or female?

Genesis 36:12 - And Timna was concubine to Eliphaz Esau's son; and she bare to Eliphaz Amalek: these were the sons of Adah Esau's wife.
1 Chronicles 1:36 - The sons of Eliphaz; Teman, and Omar, Zephi, and Gatam, Kenaz, and Timna, and Amalek.

"And Timna was concubine to Eliphaz Esau's son; and she bare to Eliphaz Amalek: these were the sons of Adah Esau's wife." vs. "The sons of Eliphaz; Teman, and Omar, Zephi, and Gatam, Kenaz, and Timna, and Amalek."

Is Timna a male or a female?

Apparently, Eliphaz named one of his sons after his concubine. This may sound weird, but there are plenty of names used today that can be used for both a boy and a girl:

  • Chris

  • Gene

  • Dana

  • Terry

  • Jamie

  • Pat

There are many others, but I think you get the point. Even though Timna isn't very popular today, this scenario wouldn't be any different than if a man had a wife named Chris, and then named his son Chris also.
