The solution to this problem is YES. Yes Saul was killed by himself, yes Saul was killed by the Philistines, and yes Saul was killed by God. In a series of action each of the three are responsible for Saul’s death, beginning with the Philistines whose archers wounded him badly in the battle (I Sam 31:3). Knowing that he would soon die at their hands he pleads with his armor bearer to kill him, but as you said his armor bearer was too afraid and lied about it later, so Saul fell on his own sword (I Sam 31:4). Of course God who is the author of both life and death had a hand in Saul’s death (Ps 7:11-13, Ps 68:20). Death can be a chain reaction from one person's behavior and involve many, for example who is responsible for Jesus Christ’s death? Was Jesus killed by his own people the Jews (Acts 2:23-24, Mt 27:22, 25), by God (Jn 3:16-18, Jn 10:17-18), by Pilate (Mk 15:15, Lk 23:24-25), by Judas (Mt 26:47-49, Mt 27:3-4), or did he lay down his own life (Phil 2:8, Mt 20:28, Jn 6:51)? The answer of course is that all the people listed share in responsibility for Jesus’ death, it was a sequence of events that lead to his death where all involved are implicated. You’re right…that was fun :)
