In Matthew it states that David is the father of Solomon and continues on to Christ, whereas Luke states that David is the father of Nathan and continues to Christ. One line is Joseph the other is Mary's family tree. | | Date: Jun 21, 2008 | Posted By: JSampson | Expanding on Jare's answer, the Jews had a rule that "the family of a mother is not called a family," see [Juchasin, fol. 55. 2.]. For this reason, to give Mary's lineage, they would have to address Joseph, which was still fine because he was the Son (in law) of Heli, having married Mary, Heli's daughter.
The legitimacy of Mary being the daughter of Heli is further substantiated by external Jewish sources such as [T. Hieros. Sanhedrin, fol. 25. 3.], which addresses Mary as "Mary the daughter of Eli". | | Post a solution! |
