Kings of Israel & Judah

From Saul to the fall of Jerusalem, every reign on one time scale, time running down the page: the united kingdom across the top, then Judah on the left and Israel on the right. A line joins a king to the king in whose year the Bible says he began to reign. The kings are on the Timeline of the Bible too, beside the prophets and empires of their days.

Each box runs from the year a king began to reign to the year his reign ended. The lighter boxes beside them are years a son shared with his father, a rival’s years, and years of confusion. A line joins a king to the king in whose year the Bible says he began to reign, with that year in his box.

Years with No King

Israel · 784–773 BC

No king. Ussher's “Anarchie” of eleven years and a half after Jeroboam II, so that Zachariah's six months fall in Azariah's thirty and eighth year (2 Kings 15:8).

“all was reduced to a plain Anarchie among them: which lasted eleven years and a half”

Israel · 739–731 BC

Hoshea had slain Pekah, but Ussher has Israel in confusion nine years before Hoshea reigned in peace (2 Kings 15:30; 17:1).

“that state continued in confusion, and in a kinde of Anarchy, for the space of 9 years”

Years from Archbishop James Ussher’s Annals of the World (1658), whose dates were printed in the margins of King James Bibles for two centuries.
