Archelaus
Ruler of Judaea · About 1 BC–AD 6
The Years
- Began 1 BC
- From Herod’s death in 1 BC. Ussher: 4 BC
- “Then was the Kings Funerals most royally prepared by Archelaus”
- Ended AD 6
- “sent him into banishment into Vienna of France”
Archelaus did reign in Judaea in the room of his father Herod (Matthew 2:22), from Herod’s death early in 1 BC until Caesar banished him to Vienne in Gaul, in the consulship the margin dates AD 6. Josephus has him banished in his tenth year, and the coins of his brothers count their years from 4 BC, the year most historians give for Herod’s death. Those who date it in 1 BC hold that the sons counted their reigns from 4 BC, when Antipater, the heir before them, was set aside; no record says so.
Where the year isn’t Ussher’s, the text sets it, and the note says how. Ussher’s years and sentences are from his Annals of the World (1658), quoted as printed.
