The Years

Born 3 BC
The early church’s date for the birth, with Herod’s death in 1 BC. Ussher: 5 BC
“in the fulnesse of time was born of the most blessed Virgin Mary”
Ascended AD 31
The Crucifixion in AD 31, by Daniel’s seventy weeks. Ussher: AD 33
“while they beheld he was taken up, and a cloud received him out of their sight”

Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures, and rose again the third day (1 Corinthians 15:3-4); he shewed himself alive forty days, and was taken up (Acts 1:3, 9). Born in the autumn of 3 BC, as the early church dated it (see The Birth of Jesus Christ; Ussher has 5 BC), he “began to be about thirty years of age” (Luke 3:23) at his baptism in AD 27, and was crucified in AD 31, after three years and a half, at thirty-three and a half.

Changes from Ussher

Where the year isn’t Ussher’s, the text sets it, and the note says how. Ussher’s years and sentences are from his Annals of the World (1658), quoted as printed.
