What the Bible Says

  • “And the land had rest forty years. And Othniel” Judges 3:11

Each year here fits these numbers, as the years between the points they count from.

The Years

Began 1405 BC
“of the Tribe of Juda, being stirred up by God, as a Judge and avenger of his people, defeated Cushan”
Ended 1343 BC
“After the decease of Othoniel, the Israelites”

Ussher counts each rest of Judges from the deliverance before it, so the years of each oppression fall within the rest they end: the forty years of Judges 3:11 from the rest Joshua gave (Joshua 11:23).

Dated by Archbishop James Ussher’s Annals of the World (1658), quoted as printed, whose dates were printed in the margins of King James Bibles for two centuries.
