He Rises from the Dead

Saturday, the 17th · The Sabbath · At its end

When

“three days and three nights in the heart of the earth” Matthew 12:40

Where It Is Told

Matthew 28:5–6
5 And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. 6 He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.
Mark 16:6
6 And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him.
Luke 24:5–7
5 And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead? 6 He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee, 7 Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.

Three days and three nights from His burial on Wednesday at evening: so He was risen before the women came, “when it was yet dark” (John 20:1).

The Date

He rose at the end of the weekly sabbath, three days and three nights after His burial on Wednesday at evening (Matthew 12:40; 28:1), and the women found the sepulchre empty early on the first day of the week, “when it was yet dark” (John 20:1). Ussher dates the women’s coming “(April the fifth)” of AD 33, two days after a Friday crucifixion.
